Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. As a young infant, Ford struggled with anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted through word-related associations. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time, Ford decided that it was not the right venue for her. Ford applied again to Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth application she was accepted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring for Doctor Who. Ford didn't graduate until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also performed regularly at the theater, ultimately becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies that were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
